Submersible Pump Maintenance in Wastewater Applications: Practical Tips
Wastewater is one of the harshest operating environments for submersible pumps. Regular maintenance prevents unexpected downtime and significantly extends pump life. Here are practical maintenance tips that work in the field.
Wastewater applications constantly expose submersible pumps to abrasive solids, fibres, fats and corrosive compounds. Under these conditions, a planned maintenance programme is not a luxury but a necessity. A well-structured maintenance regime prevents failure-induced overflows and environmental risks while keeping operating costs low.
Regular Visual and Audible Checks
Abnormal vibration, a rising noise level or irregular current draw are the first warning signs of most failures. Operators are advised to record the pump's running sound, the current readings on the panel and the flow-pressure indicators on a weekly basis. Trend monitoring provides a much earlier warning than a sudden breakdown.
Impeller and Volute Cleaning
The most common problem in wastewater is the build-up of fibres and rags around the impeller, leading to clogging. Clogging reduces efficiency, strains the motor and increases energy consumption. Periodically dismantling the pump to clean the impeller and volute area is critical to maintaining performance. A clog-resistant impeller design reduces this risk but is no substitute for regular inspection.
Mechanical Seal and Oil Inspection
The mechanical seal is the critical component that separates the motor from the fluid. If the oil in the oil chamber turns a milky white, it indicates a leak through the seal and requires immediate action. The oil level and quality should be checked at set intervals and replaced according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Electrical Insulation and Protection
The insulation resistance of the motor winding (megohm measurement) should be monitored periodically. Falling insulation values are a precursor to moisture ingress. The functionality of thermal protection relays, residual-current devices and level floats should also be tested regularly.
